October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, a time to recognize the thousands of dogs waiting for a family and a place to call home. For us at Hidden Pet Fence of Rochester, this one hits especially close to home. Over the years, many of the dogs we have had the privilege of working with have been shelter dogs and rescues, and one thing they have taught us is that every dog comes with a different story.
A Dog Doesn’t Have to Start as a Puppy
We often meet families who wonder whether an underground dog fence will work for a newly adopted dog, especially an adult dog whose history may not be completely known. Successful boundary training is not reserved for puppies. We have trained dogs of different ages, breeds, personalities, backgrounds, and experience levels. Some are confident and outgoing, while others are cautious in a brand-new environment. Some have already had extensive obedience training, while others are learning household rules and routines for the first time. That’s exactly why our training is never one-size-fits-all.
Training the Dog in Front of Us
At Hidden Pet Fence, professional training is an important part of every installation. Our Conditioned Response Training approach is designed to teach dogs to understand and respect their new boundary without simply relying on a high correction level to stop them. We begin with the lowest appropriate training levels and pay close attention to each dog’s individual response.
For a rescue dog, that individualized approach can be especially important. We may not know everything the dog experienced before arriving in their new home, but we can pay attention to what they are telling us now. A confident dog who is easily distracted and highly motivated to chase squirrels may need a different approach than a nervous dog who would rather stay close to their new owner. Our trainers adjust the process to the individual dog and help owners understand what to do between training sessions. With our Hidden Pet Fence installations, unlimited boundary training is also available if additional help is needed.
Safe Freedom Can Be Part of Their New Beginning
Bringing home a shelter dog is about much more than giving them a roof over their head. It’s giving them a new routine, a family, a yard to explore, and eventually the confidence to understand that this is home. An underground dog fence can give adopted dogs the freedom to run, play, sniff, sunbathe, and simply enjoy their new yard while giving their families peace of mind.
Whether your newest family member is a young puppy, a five-year-old rescue, or a senior dog starting a completely new chapter, we’ll meet them where they are. Age and background don’t determine whether a dog can learn their new boundary. They simply help us determine the best way to teach them.
