One misconception that many pet owners have is that underground fences are strictly for dogs. This is absolutely not the case! In fact, we have lots of cats and even livestock animals currently using our fence system! Cats are the second most common pet we have successfully trained. Although their training may look a bit different than dogs, we love to see cats safely outside and enjoying the fresh air with the rest of their families.
While training dogs on our fence system, we keep them on leash for most of their training to ensure they understand the boundaries. Taking this step with cats is also beneficial if possible. Some cats will wear a harness and walk on a leash just like their canine friends. This is the most effective way to train any animal, however we know it is not always possible. We do have special training protocol for cats and other animals that will not tolerate a leash. Everything our professional trainers do will be tailored to your pet’s specific needs.
There are a few things to keep in mind while shopping for a containment solution for cats. The number one consideration should be to make sure your cat will tolerate wearing a collar. We know this can be brand new for some cats, so we suggest trying a regular store bought collar first to get your cat acclimated to the change in wardrobe. If they don’t mind, that is one step in the right direction! Another important topic to discuss with your pet fence professional would be a proper fence layout to ensure there are no escape routes for a cat to potentially find.
